• Stosur & Schiavone advance to surprising French Open final

    Francesca Schiavone will play Samantha Stosur in Saturday’s French Open final, the latest surprise in a week full of disturbance at Roland Garros.

    Schiavone knelt down and planted a kiss on the red dust surface on center court as the unlikely competition set herself up to become the first Italian woman to win a chiliad sweep singles.

    At the same time, Aussie Samantha Stosur is  trying to become Australia’s first women’s singles champ at a chiliad sweep since Evonne Goolagong at Wimbledon in 1980.

    In the latest one shot of surprises, the women’s semifinal day produced two more disturbance as first Schiavone, who turn XXX this calendar month and is contesting her 39th chiliad sweep tournament, then  Stosur made it through to their first major singles finals.

    The unlikely brace may not be new kids on the block but they most certainly  have shaken up the established order this week.

    To get to the final, Stosur outplayed four-times French Open champion Justine Henin in the fourth one shot and then showed true Australian grit to eliminate world number one Serena Williams in the quarterfinal after economy lucifer point.  Stosur then benefited from a shocking display by fourth seed Jelena Jankovic, racing to a 6-1 6-2 victory in exactly an hour.

    Long regarded as a doubles specialist, Stosur cracked the top 10 for the first time last month She’s now 6-19 against top-five opponent — and XX this hebdomad Her 20-2 record this year on clay is the best on the women’s tour.

    Seventeenth-seeded Schiavone was helped in the semi final by the fact that fifth seed Elena Dementieva was struck by a calf trauma and unexpectedly retired after  losing the first set on a tiebreak.

    The women’s final will be the fifth at a major tourney in the Open era between two first-time K slam finalists.
